Hazel and Gus- Ideas about themselves and cancer

How would you describe the two main characters, Hazel and Gus? Do either of them conform, in behavior or thinking, to what we normally associate with young cancer patients? How do the two differ from one another...and how do their personality traits and interests complement each other?

Hazel  and Gus are very unique characters in this book. They have two WAY different ideas on having cancer, Gus is optimistic about almost everything and Hazel is very sad and depressed and thinks “its all symptoms of death”. Hazel thinks she is not pretty, but Gus thinks she is beautiful like the actress from “V for Vendetta.” Hazel thinks that the way she thinks as a young person, she is reacting the right way. But Gus also thinks the way he is about it is the right way too, their ideas are completely opposite. Maybe that is way they are attracted to one another.
